Odisha Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Low Pressure Area Over BoB Intensifies

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is expected to experience heavy rainfall across multiple districts until September 10, as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is forecasted to strengthen into a depression in the coming days.

The Meteorological Department reports that the low-pressure system, currently situated over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, is likely to intensify into a depression by September 9. This system will then move west-northwestwards, impacting Gangetic West Bengal, northern Odisha, Jharkhand, and parts of north Chhattisgarh over the next few days.

In light of this, heavy rainfall is anticipated in various parts of Odisha.

Weather Forecast

September 8: Expect heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) in Sambalpur and Angul. Other districts such as Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Jajpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, and Dhenkanal will see heavy rainfall (7-11 cm).

September 9: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) is likely in Sundargarh and Jharsuguda. Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) may occur in Bargarh, Bolangir, Nuapada, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Sonepur, Boudh, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi.

September 10: Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) is expected in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Balasore, Bhadrak, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur.

Additionally, the low-pressure system will bring squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, along the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha’s coast from September 8 to 10.

Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into these waters during this period and should return to shore by the evening of September 7.
