Woman Alleges Police Apathy, Attempts Self-Immolation in Odisha’s Cuttack

Cuttack: A harrowing incident unfolded on Friday as a woman resorted to extreme measures to protest her husband’s alleged wrongful arrest. She set herself ablaze in front of the Mahanga police station in Cuttack district, leaving her critically injured.

The victim was immediately rushed to Salipur Community Health Centre but was later transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital as her condition worsened. Doctors reported that she suffered approximately 54 per cent burn injuries and is currently receiving treatment.

According to reports, the woman’s husband was arrested by the police on theft charges the previous day. Despite her fervent pleas for his innocence, the police reportedly turned a deaf ear to her appeals. Driven to despair by the perceived injustice, she took the drastic step of self-immolation.

A senior police official has confirmed the initiation of an investigation into the matter.
