World Cup 2023, IND vs ENG: Shami, Bumrah Breathe Fire as India Decimate England By 100 Runs

Lucknow: In a dominant display, India secured their sixth consecutive victory in the World Cup by defeating England with a 100-run margin. Their triumph was propelled by a brilliant 87-run knock from captain Rohit Sharma, who anchored the innings on a challenging pitch. Suryakumar Yadav’s contribution of 49 runs in the death overs was crucial in pushing India’s total to 229 for nine.

India’s bowlers, led by Mohammed Shami (4/22) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/32), were the standout performers, reducing England to a meagre 129 all out in just 34.5 overs. This loss effectively eliminates England from semifinal contention, while India, the sole undefeated team in the tournament, moves closer to securing their spot in the semis.

On a below-par pitch, early wickets were essential for India to exert pressure on England’s struggling batting lineup. Bumrah and Shami combined effectively, leaving England at 39 for four in the 10th over. Both bowlers troubled the batsmen with their precision, creating a Test match-like atmosphere. Bumrah was on the verge of a hat-trick after dismissing Dawid Malan and Joe Root in consecutive deliveries, while Shami accounted for Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes. Stokes’ dismissal was particularly noteworthy as he attempted to make room for an aggressive shot but ended up in a poor position, resulting in his stumps being shattered. Bumrah and Shami’s initial spell figures were outstanding, leaving England reeling at 52 for five.

Kuldeep Yadav further exacerbated England’s woes by dismissing skipper Jos Buttler with a brilliant delivery. Shami returned to claim his third wicket by getting Moeen Ali caught behind. At 81 for six, England’s chances of recovery seemed bleak.

Despite challenging conditions, Rohit Sharma’s masterclass at the crease was the highlight of India’s batting performance. He formed a crucial 91-run partnership with K L Rahul, stabilizing the innings after India had slumped to 40 for three. However, the fall of Rohit’s wicket triggered a series of dismissals for India.

England’s bowlers, including Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, and David Willey, excelled in defending the total. Woakes, in particular, was accurate and effective. While Rohit led the way with his strokeplay, other Indian batsmen like Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer struggled and departed early in search of aggressive shots.
