Arvind Kejriwal to Meet Lt Governor Tomorrow at 4:30 PM, Likely To Resign

New Delhi: A day after his unexpected declaration to step down, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has requested a meeting with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow at 4:30 pm, during which Kejriwal is expected to formally submit his resignation.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader made the surprise announcement while addressing party workers, saying, “In two days, I will resign as Chief Minister. I won’t remain in the position until the people deliver their verdict in the upcoming elections.” While Delhi elections are still months away, Kejriwal stated that he had received justice from the legal courts and now sought justice from the people. He added that AAP MLAs would meet soon to elect a new Chief Minister for the interim period.

The announcement comes just days after the Supreme Court granted Kejriwal bail in a corruption case related to Delhi’s now-repealed liquor policy. The court, however, imposed strict conditions on his release.

Manish Sisodia, another senior AAP leader, has echoed Kejriwal’s sentiments, stating that he too will only return to office after securing the people’s mandate in the upcoming elections. Several AAP leaders, including Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, Raghav Chadha, and Sanjay Singh, are seen as contenders for the top post until the elections.

Meanwhile, the opposition BJP has dismissed Kejriwal’s announcement. Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva pointed out that the people had already expressed their verdict in the recent Lok Sabha polls. Congress, which contested the general elections in alliance with AAP, called Kejriwal’s resignation move a political stunt. Delhi Congress Chief Devendra Yadav criticised Kejriwal for not resigning during the city’s floods and water shortage crisis.
