BJP Candidates Win Senior Deputy Mayor, Deputy Mayor Posts of Chandigarh Corporation

Chandigarh: BJP’s Kuljit Singh Sandhu and Rajinder Sharma won the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor on Monday defeating Congress-AAP candidates Gurpreet Singh Gabi and Nirmala Devi, respectively, in the re-election in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation held on Monday.

BJP’s Sandhu got 19 votes and Congress’ Gurpreet Gabi received 16 while one vote was declared invalid.

For the Deputy Mayor’s post, BJP’s Rajinder Sharma was the winner with 19 votes, while INDIA bloc candidate Nirmala Devi got 17 votes.

The results were announced by newly appointed Mayor Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor, the presiding authority of the poll.

In the 35-member Chandigarh municipal corporation, the BJP has increased its strength from 14 to 17 after three AAP councillors joined the BJP on February 19. The AAP has 10 and the Congress has seven in the corporation. The Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor.

Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher, who is a BJP member, has voting rights as an ex-officio member of the corporation.
