Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Centre Moves SC Alleging Serious Non-Cooperation By Bengal Govt

New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday urged the Supreme Court to direct the West Bengal government to fully cooperate with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and adhere to the court’s orders regarding the Kolkata rape and murder case.

In an affidavit, the Centre asked the Court to consider initiating contempt proceedings against state officials for deliberate non-compliance if cooperation is not extended.

The Supreme Court Bench, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, had previously ordered the deployment of CISF at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and its hostels following the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The incident, which occurred during her night shift, was followed by a mob vandalising the hospital. The Court’s order aimed to address the security concerns stemming from these events.

The Centre has now accused the West Bengal government of failing to provide adequate accommodation, transportation and storage for security equipment, especially for the female contingent. The petition stresses the urgency of proper facilities, asserting that the state’s lack of cooperation jeopardizes the safety of doctors, particularly women.

The Centre argues that the state’s inaction, despite numerous requests, reflects a systemic issue of non-cooperation with central agencies operating under court directives. It claims this non-compliance shows a blatant disregard for the Supreme Court’s orders and accuses the West Bengal government of obstructing the solution-oriented measures initiated by the Court.

The Centre asserts that the state’s lack of effort is causing further injustice and undermining the security arrangements for its residents.
