Couple Running Illegal Sex Determination Center Arrested in Cuttack

 

 

Cuttack: The owner of an illegal prenatal sex determination center in Cuttack and his wife were arrested by a special squad of the Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) department on Thursday. They were also alleged to be involved in female feticide.  The special squad conducted raid on the illegal sex determination centre running at a rented house at Roxy lane in Badambadi police station area on Wednesday.

The two arrested duo was Nijeet Mohapatra and his wife Mamina Mohapatra. Another accused, Bhikari Parida managed to escape.

The special squad conducted simultaneous raids at three different places. Apart from the arrests, some medical equipment including two potable ultrasound machines used for prenatal sex determination were seized. Some medicines used for female feticide were also seized.

Local police have seized CCTV footage from the illegal centre. It is suspected that Nijeet’s son and some doctors were also involved in the illegal activity.

Cuttack district health department sealed the Operation Theatre (OT) and cancelled the renewal license of the health facility run by the arrested couple.
