Draft Document of Uniform Civil Code Submitted to Uttarakhand Govt

Dehradun: The draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) prepared by a committee appointed for the purpose was submitted to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in Dehradun on Friday. If implemented, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to adopt the UCC.

The UCC draft-making committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai submitted the UCC draft to Dhami at a programme organised at Mukhya Sevak Sadan.

After receiving the UCC draft, the state government will approve it in a cabinet meeting on Saturday. The draft is likely to be tabled in the form of a bill in the House on February 6.

In his message on X, Dhami stated in Hindi, “The committee formed to prepare the draft for the purpose of implementing the UCC will submit the draft today at 11 am in Dehradun. After reviewing, we will move forward in the direction of implementing the UCC in the state by bringing a bill in the upcoming assembly session.”

The five-member committee headed by Justice Desai was formed in May 20222 to draft the UCC.

The UCC will provide a legal framework for a uniform marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance laws for all citizens in Uttarakhand, irrespective of their religion.
