Eyeballs Missing from Corpse, 2 Doctors Arrested in UP for Human Organ Trade

Lucknow: Two government doctors posted as personnel of Provincial Medical Services (PMS) doctors in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district were arrested following the discovery of missing eyeballs of a dead body.

The arrested doctors, Mohammed Owaish and Arif Hussain posted at the Civil Lines police station, Badaun, were charged with the illegal sale of human organs.

Both were sent to judicial custody as their bail plea was rejected by a court of chief judicial magistrate.

Badaun police are investigating this case of missing eyes of a female body from the Badaun government medical college.

Newly married Pooja Maurya committed suicide on December 10. After post-mortem on Monday, her body was handed over to her family for cremation. The woman’s family found that her eyeballs were missing and reported to the police and district administration about it.

Following the complaint, a second post-mortem of the woman’s body was conducted by a panel of three doctors on the directions of the District Magistrate. An FIR was registered on the complaint of the woman’s brother against the accused doctors and pharmacist for the missing eyes.

The arrested doctors claimed the eyes of the woman were missing before they conducted the first post-mortem. However, they did not inform the family of the deceased to avoid any trouble.

A magisterial inquiry is continuing into the case. report in the case would come on Friday, he said.

The president of the PMS Doctors’ Association protested the arrest of the doctors and alleged that they were arrested before the magisterial inquiry was completed.
