Hirakud Dam’s 10 Sluice Gates Open Following Rains in Upper Catchment Area

Sambalpur: Eight more sluice gates of Hirakud Dam were opened on Thursday following rains in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi river.

As heavy rains are expected to continue and the water level in the reservoir may increase, so the Hirakud dam authorities decided to open eight more sluice gates on Thursday to release the flood waters.

Now flood water is being released from a total of 10 sluice gates. On Wednesday, two sluice gates of the Hirakud dam were opened up.

The people in the low-lying areas have been warned not to venture into the river bed as it is being flooded by the water released through the open sluice gates.

At present water is being evacuated through 5 gates each opened on each side of the dam.
