Wayanad Landslide Death Toll Touches 106, Hundreds Feared Trapped

Wayanad: A series of catastrophic landslides struck Kerala’s Wayanad district early Tuesday, claiming at least 106 lives and injuring 128 others. Hundreds more are feared trapped as rescue efforts continue in the hilly region near Meppadi.

The disaster, triggered by heavy rainfall, has prompted a multi-agency response. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Army have deployed teams to the affected areas. Three separate landslides occurred within a four-hour span, with Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages bearing the brunt of the devastation.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the event as a “heart-wrenching disaster,” noting that an entire locality had been wiped out. The state government has declared two days of mourning in response to the tragedy.

Rescue operations face significant challenges due to ongoing rain and difficult terrain.

The Indian Army has sent 225 personnel, including medical teams, while the Air Force has deployed helicopters to assist. The Indian Navy is also joining the relief efforts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced compensation for the victims’ families and spoken with CM Vijayan, assuring central government support. The Prime Minister’s Office will provide Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Former Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi expressed his anguish and stated he had contacted local authorities to offer assistance. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for several Kerala districts, warning of continued heavy rainfall.
