Kolkata: Kolkata police made three additional arrests on Thursday evening in connection with the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, bringing the total number of arrests to 12. The arrested individuals were presented in court and remanded to police custody until August 22.

The incident, which occurred a day after the hospital’s emergency ward was damaged, saw doctors staging a protest outside the hospital. They surrounded the administrative building, preventing the principal and superintendent from leaving. The demonstrators demanded answers from hospital authorities regarding the early morning vandalism.

Earlier in the day, nurses at the hospital also protested, highlighting the extensive damage caused by the mob. The emergency ward was left in disarray, with medical equipment and furniture destroyed.

Kolkata Police assured that the crime scene related to the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor remained secure. According to the police, a group of 40 to 50 individuals, disguised as protesters, attacked the hospital late Wednesday night. In response, law enforcement used tear gas and a lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

The violence coincided with a midnight ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign, where women gathered to protest the doctor’s murder and subsequently gathered at the hospital.
