Paris Olympics: Lakshya Sen Stuns World No. 4 Jonatan Christie, Advances to Pre-Quarters

Paris: Indian badminton sensation Lakshya Sen produced a stunning upset, defeating world number four Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in straight games (21-18, 21-12) to secure a spot in the pre-quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics men’s singles competition on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old from Almora, a 2021 World Championships bronze medalist, displayed exceptional maturity and tactical prowess to outshine the reigning All England and Asian champion. Despite a 1-4 head-to-head record against Christie, Sen rose to the occasion, keeping the shuttle low and targeting his opponent’s weaker forehand.

Christie, known for his deceptive cross-court shots, struggled to contain Sen’s aggressive play. The Indian, who had previously defeated Kevin Cordon and Julien Carraggi in the group stage, showcased remarkable resilience and precision.

Sen’s victory sets up a potential clash with compatriot HS Prannoy in the pre-quarterfinals. Prannoy is scheduled to face Vietnam’s Le Duc Phat later in the day.

With this impressive win, Lakshya Sen has not only elevated India’s medal hopes but has also established himself as a formidable force in world badminton.
