Popcorn, Cold Drinks Now Cheaper in Film Halls, GST Reduced

New Delhi: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, headed by the Union finance minister has decided to lower the service tax on food and beverages in movie halls to 5% from 18%.

Multiplexes earn up to 35 per cent of their revenue from food and beverages. So, multiplex operators welcomed the Centre’s decision saying it will help them revive their business.

As per a clarification issued by the GST Council, the food and beverages sold at the cinemas will be covered under the definition of ‘restaurant service’ and will be liable to GST at five percent.
