World Cup 2023, 2nd Semi-Final: Starc, Hazlewood Leave Proteas in Quandary As Rain Halts Proceedings

Kolkata: The highly anticipated second semifinal of the ODI World Cup 2023 between Australia and South Africa was disrupted by rain, with covers firmly in place currently, leaving the Proteas in a precarious position at 44/4 after 14 overs.

Opting to bat first, the Proteas didn’t quite get off to the start they expected owing to some top-quality bowling from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. The duo wreaked havoc on the South African batting lineup, claiming two wickets each. Starc and Hazlewood’s exceptional bowling performances left the Proteas batsmen perplexed, struggling to find their rhythm.

The Proteas’ innings began on a shaky note as captain Temba Bavuma was dismissed early, followed by Quinton de Kock. Despite a brief period of resistance from Rassie van der Dussen, who faced 31 deliveries for a meager score of 6, Josh Hazlewood struck a crucial blow, dismissing van der Dussen and further compounding South Africa’s woes. Aiden Markram who tried to counter-attack was also dismissed soon after.

With rain interrupting the match and South Africa struggling to find their footing, the outcome of this crucial encounter remains uncertain. The victor of this semifinal will advance to the ODI World Cup 2023 final, where they will face off against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
