Ruang Volcano Erupts in Indonesia, 12000 Evacuated

Indonesia’s Ruang volcano erupted on Tuesday. More than 12,000 people living on a nearby island were evacuated to safe places.

According to locals, spewing lava as lightning flashes lit up the crater of the Ruang volcano. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) warned the residents of nearby Tagulandang island that a tsunami may occur due to the volcanic material falling into the ocean.

Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) said that all 843 residents living in Ruang island were shifted to Manado. Inhabitants of Tagulandang island were relocated to Siau island.

Indonesian Authorities closed Manado’s Sam Ratulangi airport on Tuesday due to threat of volcanic ash. The airport will remain closed until noon on Wednesday.

Indonesia is on the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” an area of high seismic activity.
