Uttarakhand Assembly Passes Uniform Civil Code Bill

Dehradun: In a landmark move, Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The bill, passed by the state assembly on Wednesday, aims to establish a common set of personal laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships for all citizens, regardless of their religion.

The Bill, aimed at replacing archaic personal laws governing marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships, garnered approval despite opposition calls for referral to a select committee.

Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the Bill’s significance in promoting equality, uniformity, and women’s rights. He reassured that the legislation aligns with constitutional principles and addresses societal norms that pose challenges for women.

The Uniform Civil Code promises equal rights to all, regardless of gender, in crucial matters such as marriage, maintenance, inheritance, and divorce. Dhami stressed its pivotal role in eliminating discrimination against women and ensuring their holistic development.

While the Congress party expressed willingness for the Bill’s passage, it advocated for a detailed examination by a select committee to rectify any potential flaws.

This move fulfills one of the key promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party in the 2022 Uttarakhand Assembly election manifesto.

The Bill now awaits presidential approval, heralding a significant stride towards gender equality and social justice in Uttarakhand.
