Assam to Implement UCC in 2024, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Exemptions for Tribals

Dispur: Assam is set to become the third state, following Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to enact the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), according to an announcement by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The Chief Minister highlighted that the draft bill for Assam would be specifically tailored to align with the “Assam model.”

Sarma stated that tribals in Assam would be exempted from the UCC, emphasizing the state’s commitment to addressing issues like child marriage and polygamy. The introduction of the bill is expected after its implementation in Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

“The Assam bill will feature some modifications, incorporating Assam-centric innovations. We are keen on exempting tribals from the UCC,” Sarma explained.

The Uniform Civil Code aims to establish a standardized set of personal laws applicable uniformly to all citizens, fostering equality and justice. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underlined the significance of a single legal framework, asserting that the nation cannot operate efficiently with dual laws. He believes that the UCC aligns with the fundamental principles and ideals of the Constitution.

The Assam-specific version of the UCC is anticipated to bring unique adaptations to address regional nuances while upholding the broader objectives of equality and justice.
