WATCH: Iranians Celebrate Their Loss Against US At FIFA, Know Why!

Tehran: In an astonishing event, exultant Iranians celebrated their nation’s loss at the FIFA World Cup, on Wednesday.

As their side lost the match against the US on Tuesday, people flocked to the streets to shout, dance, honk, and light fireworks.

In the wake of the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who was allegedly killed by an oppressive administration, the nation, which has been protesting since, has rejected its football team because it sees them as an extension of the government.

Since Amini was slain in jail on September 16 by the infamous morality police of Iran for improperly donning her hijab, there have been protests all throughout the country. The Islamic Republic dispatched security troops and called the demonstrations “riots.”

Iran’s citizens lit off fireworks in many cities, including Saqez, the hometown of Amini, to celebrate the national team’s defeat. Following America’s opening goal against Iran’s football team, Saqez residents began rejoicing and lighting fireworks.

In what be termed as their own interpretation of a protest, the Iranian football squad had earlier declined to sing the national anthem prior to their season-opening match against England on November 22. Although the act was praised by many as “courageous,” many Iranians still hold the view that the football team does not represent the people but rather the government.

Iran was eliminated from the World Cup after losing to the US 1-0, while the victory gave the US a spot in Qatar’s knockout round of the competition.
