All 10 Convicts in 2019 Tabrez Ansari Lynching Case Receive 10-Year Prison Terms

Ranchi: The Seraikela court in Jharkhand on Wednesday pronounced the quantum of punishment in the 2019 Tabrez Ansari lynching case. The court sentenced all 10 convicted individuals to 10 years of imprisonment under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The convicted individuals are Bhim Singh Munda, Kamal Mahato, Madan Nayak, Atul Mahali, Sunamo Pradhan, Vikram Mandal, Chamu Nayak, Prem Chand Mahali, and Mahesh Mahali.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on each of the convicted individuals. The pronouncement of the verdict comes after the court convicted the 10 accused on June 27. The public prosecutor, Ashok Kumar Rai, stated that two others were acquitted due to lack of evidence, and one accused, Kushal Mahali, passed away during the course of the trial. The prime accused, Prakash Mandal alias Pappu Mandal, is already in judicial custody.

The brutal incident occurred on June 17, 2019, in Dhatkidih village under the jurisdiction of Seraikela police station. Tabrez Ansari, a labourer and welder from Pune who had returned home to celebrate Eid, was lynched by a mob over suspicion of attempting to steal a motorcycle. The perpetrators beat him with rods, leading to his untimely demise.

This verdict serves as a crucial step towards justice in the Tabrez Ansari lynching case. The court’s decision to hand out significant prison sentences aims to deter such acts of mob violence and uphold the rule of law. The sentencing sends a message that such acts will not be tolerated in society. The legal process has taken its course, and the convicts will now face the consequences of their actions.
