Why Kartavya Path? The Hidden Charms of India’s Republic Day Celebrations

New Delhi: India is gearing up to mark its 75th Republic Day on January 26, 2024, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution in 1950. The focal point of the celebrations is the grand Republic Day parade on Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) in New Delhi. This historic stretch, extending from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, played a pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence.

Originally named Kingsway, it served as the central axis in New Delhi after the capital was relocated from Calcutta in 1911. Following independence, it was renamed Rajpath, witnessing the dawn of freedom and hosting Republic Day celebrations for seven decades. In September 2022, Rajpath was officially renamed Kartavya Path as part of the redesigned Central Vista Avenue, symbolizing a shift from a symbol of power to one representing public ownership and empowerment.

Prime Minister Modi, during the inauguration, declared the transformation of Rajpath from a “symbol of slavery” to Kartavya Path, erasing its historical association. The Republic Day parade, a hallmark event, commences from Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan, proceeding along Kartavya Path, passing through India Gate en route to the Red Fort, covering a distance of over five kilometres.

This year’s celebrations hold special significance as India has extended an invitation to President Emmanuel Macron of France to attend the Republic Day festivities, showcasing the country’s diplomatic ties. Kartavya Path stands as a testament to India’s transformative journey from colonial subjugation to becoming a sovereign democratic republic.
