New Delhi: Former President Ram Nath Kovind’s tenure has ended on 24 July. The present president was appointed before the end of the term of President Ram Nath Kovind. As everyone knows, the President is the first citizen of India. Apart from this, he is also the Commander-in-Chief of the three armies.

In India, the President is elected by the members of the constituencies, which include the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the elected members of the states and union territories. What privileges does the President of India get?

  • The salary of the President of India is 5 lakhs per month and free medical, accommodation and medical facilities (whole life) are provided along with other allowances.
  • The President lives in the President’s House, which has about 340 rooms.
  • In addition, the Indian government spends about 22.5 million rupees annually for the President’s residence, staff, food, guests, etc.
  • The President is provided with a custom-built black Mercedes Benz S600 (W221) Pullman Guard for security.
  • A long limousine is also provided for official travel

What privileges are given to former presidents of India?

  • The former President of India gets a monthly pension of 1.5 lakhs (after 7th pay Commission).
  • The former president’s wife gets Rs. 30,000 per month as secretarial support.
  • According to the President’s Approval Act, there is a provision to spend up to Rs. 60,000 for the secretary and office of the former President.
  • A house with at least 8 rooms available is also given.
  • 2 landlines, a mobile phone, broadband and internet connection is available.
  • Free electricity and water are also given to former Presidents of India.
  • Apart from this, car and driver are also provided.
  • Free medical care, train and flight facilities in India with one person in first class ticket.
  • 5 domestic staff and free vehicle with all facilities provided.
  • 2 secretaries are also provided with Delhi Police protection.

However, according to media reports, preparations are underway to give a house to President Ram Nath Kovind at 12 Janpath after his retirement. This bungalow is the biggest bungalow in Lutyens zone in Delhi. However, no allocation has been made in his name. Before 2020, former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan lived in this bangalow. This house could be the new address of President Ram Nath Kovind after his term ends.
