Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: RG Kar Principal Resigns, Appointed Head of Another Major Medical College Hours Later

Kolkata: A wave of outrage has engulfed West Bengal following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The incident has sparked widespread protests and demands for stringent action against the perpetrators.

Adding fuel to the fire, the state government’s decision to appoint Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar who resigned in the aftermath of the crime, as the head of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital has ignited further fury among students and the public.

Ghosh stepped down, citing moral responsibility for the incident, but his subsequent appointment has been met with accusations of the government shielding him. Protests have erupted across the state, with students demanding justice for the victim and accountability from those in power.

The Mamata Banerjee-led government has also appointed Dr. Suhita Pal as the new principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, while Dr. Ajay Roy, the former head of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, has been transferred to the Health Department.

A civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the case, and the Kolkata Police is probing the incident with a Special Investigative Team (SIT).

Kolkata Police have summoned four junior doctors who dined with the victim for questioning. The Special Investigative Team (SIT) has already interviewed seven doctors and staff members from the college. Additionally, the Head of the Department of chest medicine and various hospital personnel on duty during the incident have been called for questioning.
