VP Mimicry Row: President Murmu Condemns VP Dhankhar’s Humiliation in Parliament, Calls for Dignity

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu expressed her disappointment on Wednesday over the apparent humiliation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar within the Parliament complex. She urged MPs to adhere to the norms of dignity and courtesy when expressing themselves. The President emphasized the importance of upholding the proud Parliamentary tradition and meeting the expectations of the People of India.

TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee sparked controversy by mimicking Vice President Dhankhar during a protest against the suspension of Opposition MPs. Dhankhar, visibly upset, deemed it an “insult to his Jat farmer background.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing distress over the “abject theatrics” of some MPs, personally called Dhankhar. In a show of solidarity, BJP MPs stood in Parliament for an hour.

Downplaying the controversy, TMC MP Banerjee defended his mimicry as an art form, citing that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had engaged in mimicry in the Lok Sabha during the last term. Despite having great respect for Dhankhar, Banerjee asserted that his intention was not to hurt anyone.
