Railway Ministry Announces ₹10 Lakh Compensation for Mizoram Bridge Collapse Victims

Aizawl: An under-construction railway bridge over the Kurung River in Mizoram collapsed, resulting in the loss of at least 26 lives. The collapse occurred around 10:30 AM on Wednesday, affecting the 196 bridge that connected Bairabi to Sairang in the Sairang area during construction. The mishap took place while contractors were in the process of working on the bridge and launching a girder.

The Railway Ministry has announced compensation packages for the affected families. An ex-gratia amount of ₹10 lakh was declared for the next of kin of the deceased. Additionally, ₹2 lakh was allocated for the seriously injured individuals, while minor injuries were recognized with ₹50,000 in compensation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and took action by announcing a separate ex-gratia amount of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased. This financial assistance will be drawn from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), providing support to the affected families during this difficult time.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga also conveyed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives in this unfortunate incident. He extended his gratitude to the individuals who actively participated in the rescue operation. The collapse occurred at an under-construction railway overpass in Sairang, near Aizawl, claiming the lives of at least 17 workers. Rescue efforts are currently underway, as the state works to address this tragedy.
