Chaos in Rajya Sabha: Jagdeep Dhankhar Slams ‘Destabilising Attempts’ Amid Opposition Walkout

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha was thrown into disarray on Friday following alleged objectionable remarks made by BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari about Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. The controversy led to a walkout by opposition members, intense reactions from the chairman, and a proposal for a resolution condemning the opposition’s behaviour.

The turmoil began when Kharge addressed the House during Zero Hour, seeking an apology from Tiwari for his remarks. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejected the apology demand, asserting that Tiwari had praised Kharge in Sanskrit. This led to a heated exchange, with SP’s Jaya Bachchan criticizing Dhankhar’s handling of the situation. Dhankhar responded sharply, accusing the opposition of attempting to destabilise Parliament.

As a result, the opposition members staged a walkout. Dhankhar slammed the move and warned that such actions threaten democracy. He later invited other leaders to express their views and sought guidance from the House on managing disruptions.

Leader of the House JP Nadda proposed a resolution condemning the day’s events, which was supported by NDA leaders. JD(S) leader HD Deve Gowda and others criticised the opposition’s conduct and urged Dhankhar to continue proceedings despite the walkout.

The day’s disruptions led to multiple adjournments of the Rajya Sabha.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice, first from 1 pm to 2 pm and then from 2 pm to 2:30 pm.
