Mumbai: Maharashtra government has decided to rename Ahmednagar as Ahilyanagar. The proposed renaming of this major urban center was announced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at an event on Wednesday.

The city will be renamed Ahilyanagar after the Maratha warrior queen Ahilyabai Holkar. This renaming coincides with the 298th birth anniversary of the 18th-century ruler of Malwa’s Holkar dynasty.

CM Shinde made the renaming announcement at an event attended by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar, among others.
