Bihar Govt Orders CID Inquiry into Hooch Tragedy in Motihari

Motihari (Bihar): The Bihar government has ordered a CID (Crime Investigation Department ) inquiry into the hooch tragedy in Motihari in the East Champaran district of the State. Additional Director General of Police JS Gangwar said Special Task Force( STF) has been constituted to arrest the culprits who are behind the Hooch tragedy.

Raids are also being conducted in areas. Twenty-one people have been arrested so far.  Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his grief and asked for all information related to it.

Twenty-two people died after consuming spurious liquor in different areas of  Motihari in the East Champaran district of the State. Some of them lost their eyesight. The causality is likely to increase as the condition of  19 people is critical and they are undergoing treatment in different hospitals in Motihari and Muzaffarpur.

The deaths were first reported in Lakshmipur village of Turkoulia police station, followed by the Harsiddhi, Paharpur, and Sugauli areas of Motihari. The sale and consumption of alcohol were banned in Bihar by the Nitish Kumar government in April 2016.

Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Vijay Kumar Sinha alleged that the administration has been indulging in the cover-up and also suppressing the actual death figures in the Motihari Hooch tragedy. Mr. Singh added the government has not yet taken lessons from hooch deaths that occurred in different parts of the State in the recent past.
