BRICS Foreign Ministers Condemn Terrorism, Call for Peaceful Resolution in Ukraine Conflict

Cape Town: The BRICS foreign ministers recently concluded their meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. While they did not take a clear stance on the Ukraine conflict, they strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms.

The ministers emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. They also called for the implementation of initiatives promoting Russian food products and fertilizers to reach those in need.

Recognizing the threat of terrorism and extremism, the ministers pledged to combat terrorism and its financing networks. They reaffirmed their commitment to preventing and countering terrorism globally, emphasizing that it should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group. The ministers expressed their intention to deepen counter-terrorism cooperation.

The BRICS foreign ministers also reiterated their commitment to multilateralism and upholding international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter. They emphasized the role of the UN in maintaining peace, security, sustainable development, democracy, human rights, and fundamental freedoms. They supported a free, open, and rules-based multilateral trading system, with special consideration for developing countries.

Furthermore, the ministers recalled their respective positions on Ukraine and appreciated mediation and good office proposals for a peaceful resolution. They stressed the importance of implementing the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the Memorandum of Understanding promoting Russian food products and fertilizers to reach those in need.

Additionally, the ministers highlighted the need for reforms within the United Nations, including revitalising the General Assembly and strengthening the Economic and Social Council. China and Russia expressed support for Brazil, India, and South Africa to play a more significant role in international affairs and the United Nations.
