Bride commits suicide for dowry: Accused husband goes to jail

Bhubaneswar: A woman lost her life for dowry. 3 months after marriage, sexual harassment and abuse were observed. After enduring for two years, she finally hung on the fan. The Capital police station seized the hanging body on Wednesday and detained her husband and brother-in-law in the police station for questioning.

The deceased woman was Sumitra Katia of Nayagarh District Khadpada. After getting evidence of Sumitra’s suicide, the police arrested her husband and brother-in-law on Thursday. Ganesh Katia and brother-in-law Ajit Katia were arrested. Both of them have been sent to Jharpada Jail as their bail has been rejected. On the other hand, the deceased Sumitra was two months pregnant. The police have seized Sumitra’s body and are continuing the investigation.

Sumitra Katia of Nayagarh District Khadpada married Ganesh Katia less than two years ago. A year after their marriage, both of them moved to the Capital Police Station Unit-8 Government Quarters where Ganesh works as a class IV employee. His brother also lived in his house. For the past few days, the two brothers have been abusing Sumitra mentally and physically. Her husband Ganesh repeatedly asked her to bring a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and threatened to kill her. Ganesh did not pay attention to the fact that she informed his husband about Ajith forcing her to have a relationship with him. Sumitra, who was always tense, called her mother on Wednesday and hanged herself on the fan after telling her everything. On Thursday, the police arrested the husband and the father and took them to court.
