Centre Forms Peace Committee Headed by Manipur Gov to Bring Back Normalcy in the State

New Delhi: The Central government has formed a committee in Manipur under the chairmanship of the governor to enable the return of peace among warring ethnic groups. This committee will also try to initiate dialogue between conflicting parties.

The Union home ministry declared the constitution of this committee on Saturday. This committee will have the Manipur CM, a few ministers, MPs, MLAs, and leaders from different political parties, and civil society groups, as its members.

“Government of India has constituted ‘Peace Committee’ in Manipur under the chairpersonship of the governor, Manipur. The members of the committee include the chief minister, a few ministers in the state government, MP, MLAs, and leaders from different political parties,” the home ministry statement said.

During his visit to Manipur from May 29 to June 1, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the constitution of the peace committee.

Till now around 100 persons have died in the ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status.
