Famous Dhanu Yatra from Today; Bargarh to become Vast Stage for Kamsa & Krishna

Bargarh: Famous Dhanu Yatra which is proclaimed as the world’s largest open-air theatre will start in Bargarh from Tuesday (December 27). This unique festival of folk theatre with the participation of all inhabitants of the town will continue till January 6, the day on which demonic king Kamsa will be killed on stage. Dhanu Yatra is being celebrated after a gap of two years because of the COVID pandemic.

This 11-day-long folk theatrical show will be inaugurated at 6 pm on Tuesday. During this period the story of Krishna and Kamsa will get alive in the nook and corner of Bargarh.

During Dhanu Jatra, Bargarh town is considered. River Jeera flowing by its side becomes river Yamuna. Ambapali on the other side of the river is Gopapura, the place where Krishna was sheltered to escape Kamsa’s wrath.

In Dhanu Yatra, Kamsa is the main character of the show. To befit his regality, a Raj Darbar (royal court), 42 feet tall, 120 ft long, and 35 feet wide has been constructed for this king of Mathura. There is also a Rangamahal where performers will entertain the spectators with their cultural programs.

This time Hrusikesh Bhoi is acting in the character of Kamsa for the 10th time.

Today the Dhanu Yatra festival will begin with Devaki, the sister of Kamsa getting married to Vasudeva. This festival will end with the death of Kamsa

Around 130 cultural troupes and a large number of other performers are to perform during this festival.
