Manipur Violence: 1 Killed as Troops Thwart Attempt to Loot Arms from Security Camp

Imphal: One person was killed when security forces thwarted an attack attempt by a mob on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) camp in Manipur to loot arms and ammunition. Some others were injured.

The incident occurred in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Tuesday. A mob of hundreds attacked the IRB post.

The Indian Army, in a statement, said the mob laid roadblocks to prevent the movement of troops. However, the Assam Rifles and the Rapid Action Force soon controlled the situation.

“An attempt to loot weapons from an India Reserve Battalion at Khangabok in Thoubal district of Manipur was successfully thwarted by security forces today. One rioter was killed while a few others were injured during the failed attempt,” the Army said.

The situation in several parts of Manipur remained tense, with sporadic incidents of violence being reported. Around 326 people were detained across Manipur as violence continued in this northeastern state.

Till now the ethnic violence in Manipur has claimed at least 138 lives and displaced 60,000 people.
