Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio Resigns; Stakes Claim to form New Govt

Kohima: Neiphiu Rio, who heads the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), submitted his resignation as Chief Minister of Nagaland to Governor La Ganesan on Saturday. He also staked claim to form the new government in this northeastern state.

The ruling NDPP-BJP alliance has retained power in the recently held Nagaland assembly polls. These two parties together have won 37 seats of the 60-member assembly.

Nagaland political stalwart and its longest-serving chief minister Neiphiu Rio is set to assume office for a fifth consecutive term. With the results declared for all 60 seats, NDPP won in 25 and BJP secured victory on 12 seats. So, the NDPP-BJP alliance has crossed the halfway mark and is poised to form the government in Nagaland with Neiphiu Rio as the CM.
