Opera Artiste Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For Killing Wife On Suspicion Of Infidelity

Bhubaneswar: The Additional District and Sessions Judge on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife on suspicion of infidelity.

The judge also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on convict Pradip Mallick of Anara village under Hatadihi block in Keonjhar. The convict was also sentenced to additional three years of imprisonment for destroying evidence of the crime. Besides, he has been directed to Rs 5,000 as a penalty.

As per the case details, Mallick got married to Madhusmita some years ago. The duo was working in an opera troupe and they were in a relationship before their marriage. However, suspecting having an extramarital affair of his wife with another man, Mallick killed Madhusmita by hitting her repeatedly with a bamboo stick. Later, he buried the body in his backyard to destroy the evidence.

The incident came to the fore when a foul smell emanated from the spot. On being informed by the locals, the police and members of a scientific team exhumed the body.

The police had arrested Mallick after registering a case under Sections 302 and 201 of the IPC against him.
