Robbers Dig Tunnel to Loot Gold Worth Rs 1 Cr from SBI Branch in Kanpur

Kanpur: A group of bank robbers dug up a 10-foot-long tunnel to loot gold worth around Rs 1 crore from a State Bank of India branch in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Friday night.

Using the tunnel the burglars broke into the strongroom of the SBI branch. It must have taken a long time for the burglars to dig this tunnel as it was around four feet wide. This tunnel had started from an empty plot adjacent to the SBI’s Bhanuti branch, police sources said.

The burglars used a gas cutter to crack open the locker. They also made the alarm system CCTV camera in the strongroom defunct.

As per the initial assessment, the thieves took away over 1.8 kg of gold worth around Rs 1 crore.

Police suspect the involvement of some bank personnel in this robbery.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the thieves were familiar with the construction and architecture of the bank as well as the placement of the strongroom and the gold chest.
