Electric trap laid for wild boars kills tusker in Angul

Angul: With no respite in sight from elephant deaths in the State, another jumbo has died after coming in contact with live wire at Jagannathpur under Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary here on Saturday.

The jumbo death came to light after some locals spotted its carcass inside the sanctuary in the morning and intimated the same to Forest Department officials, informed Regional Chief Conservator of Forest, Jogananda.

From the preliminary investigation it had been revealed that the ill-fated pachyderm accidentally stepped on an electric trap laid by poachers to hunt wild boars and killed. However, the exact cause of its death could be ascertained after completion of the postmortem, said Jogananda.

Worth mentioning, incidents of elephant death have multiplied in past few years in the State for which the apathetic attitude of the administration is being blamed. In a similar incident on last Wednesday two female elephants had died after coming in contact with electric wires inside Krushi Vigyan Kendra under Sadar Range in Keonjhar.
