Odisha’s Delectable ‘Rasabali’ Receives Coveted GI Tag

Bhubaneswar: The delicious offering known as ‘Rasabali,’ presented to the deities at Sri Baladevjew Temple in Odisha’s Kendrapada district, has recently been granted the coveted Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The Rasabali Nirmata Sangha in Kendrapada initiated the application for this GI tag in 2021, designating it as an authentic delicacy of the state.

Following the submission of a memorandum by a delegation from Odisha, led by Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Singh, to Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, Intellectual Property India under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has officially awarded the GI certificate to ‘Rasabali.’

The preparation of ‘Rasabali’ involves a meticulous and intricate process, with key ingredients including cheese, ghee, milk, and green cardamom. This delightful treat can only be expertly crafted by skilled confectioners.

Historically, the tradition of offering ‘Rasabali’ at the Sri Baladevjew Temple dates back to the reign of King Anangabhima Deva. Due to its growing popularity, ‘Rasabali’ can now be found throughout Kendrapada town.

It’s worth mentioning that ‘Kandhamal Haldi’ and ‘Odisha Rasagola’ were also bestowed with GI tags in the previous year.
