Odisha Suicide Rate Higher Than National Average; Experts Concerned

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has reported a higher suicide rate than the national average in 2021, according to the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state’s suicide rate was 12.3%, compared to the national average of 12%.

The NCRB’s report also found that the number of suicides in Odisha doubled in 2021 compared to 2020. Of the 5,651 suicides reported in Odisha in 2021, 71% were attributed to domestic issues.

Social scientists and psychologists in Odisha are concerned about the rising suicide rates in the state. They say that suicide is a complex issue with social, political, and family factors at play. While it is primarily a psychological problem, addressing these underlying psychological issues requires collective efforts from families, friends, and experts to prevent suicides.
