Puri Srimandir Ratna Bhandar Emptied for Structural Inspection by ASI

Puri: The empty containers from the Ratna Bhandar at Jagannath Temple in Puri were relocated today, as confirmed by Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee. The move involved shifting empty almirahs and chests to a compartment near Niladri Vihar Museum on the temple premises, following the standard operating procedure (SOP) approved by the state government.

The operation, conducted in the presence of an executive magistrate, began at 2:00 PM and concluded by 5:00 PM, with the participation of around 10-15 servitors. The 12-member team overseeing the process included Padhee and Ratna Bhandar Monitoring Committee Chairman Justice Biswanath Rath.

A portion of the outer chamber’s door was cut to facilitate the removal of a large iron chest. All containers from both the outer and inner chambers of Ratna Bhandar were successfully transferred, with the entire process being recorded as per the SOP.

The relocation marks the third phase of the Ratna Bhandar opening. Previously, the chamber was opened to shift valuables, including gold ornaments belonging to the deities, to secure strong rooms.

Following the completion of the transfer, SJTA plans to request the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a comprehensive structural inspection of Ratna Bhandar. The ASI will carry out scanning, geophysical surveys and necessary scientific inspections, followed by conservation, repair and restoration work. Once repairs are complete, the valuables will be returned to Ratna Bhandar, where an inventory will be conducted.

In total, seven chests (four wooden and three iron) and two almirahs were shifted. To facilitate the process, temple entry for devotees was restricted from 1:00 PM onwards today.
