Brendon McCullum Named England’s White-Ball Head Coach

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Tuesday announced that Brendon McCullum, currently the Men’s Test Head Coach, will also assume the role of England’s White-Ball Head Coach.

This decision is part of a strategic overhaul of the England Men’s senior setup. McCullum, who has led the Test team since May 2022, has extended his contract until the end of 2027 and will begin his new duties from January 2025, coinciding with England’s white-ball tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy.

In the meantime, Marcus Trescothick will take over as Interim Head Coach for the upcoming series against Australia and the Caribbean tour later this year.

Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, expressed his enthusiasm for McCullum’s expanded role, stating that the unification of the coaching structure is crucial for the future of English cricket. He highlighted that the easing of format clashes from January will allow McCullum to fully dedicate himself to both roles, ultimately benefiting the players and coaching staff.

McCullum shared his excitement about the new challenge, expressing his eagerness to work with Jos Buttler and the white-ball team to build on their current success. He also stressed the importance of creating a thriving environment for English cricketers and praised Rob Key’s vision for the team’s future.

After the Test series against Sri Lanka at the Kia Oval next week, McCullum will take a short break before rejoining the Test team for their winter tours of Pakistan and New Zealand.
