Hockey India CEO Elena Norman Resigns Over Unpaid Dues, Workplace Strife

New Delhi: Elena Norman, the longstanding CEO of Hockey India, has tendered her resignation, citing a challenging work environment and unpaid dues as reasons for her departure. Norman, who held the position for nearly 13 years, expressed concern over not receiving wages for the past three months and being excluded from crucial decision-making processes.

“There are two factions in Hockey India. There is (president) Dilip Tirkey and I and there is (secretary) Bholanath Singh, (executive director) RK Srivastava and (treasurer) Sekar J Manoharan. It was getting tough to deliver in the fight between two factions,” Norman said.

Her resignation closely follows that of women’s coach Janneke Schopman, who voiced feeling undervalued by Hockey India officials. Although Norman’s resignation has been accepted, the timeline for her departure remains uncertain.

Dilip Tirkey, the president of Hockey India and former Indian captain, acknowledged Norman’s significant contributions to the sport’s growth in India. Despite his efforts to convince Norman to stay, Tirkey disclosed in a communication with the board members that he was unable to address the challenges she faced, particularly regarding unpaid dues and a deteriorating work environment.

Tirkey expressed disappointment over Norman’s departure, recognizing her as a seasoned professional who played a crucial role in elevating the sport’s professionalism during her tenure. He emphasized Norman’s dedication and hard work, highlighting the loss her departure represents for Hockey India.
