Nepal PM Prachanda’s Controversial Remarks on India Stir Storm, Opposition Demands Resignation

Kathmandu: Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s recent remarks about an Indian businessman’s efforts to make him the prime minister have caused controversy in the country. Prachanda made these comments during the launch of a book highlighting the contributions of Sardar Pritam Singh to Nepal-India relations. The opposition party, the Communist Party of Nepal-(Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML), has demanded the prime minister’s resignation, stating that his remarks undermine national independence and the constitution.

The opposition parties disrupted both the National Assembly and the House of Representatives meetings, calling for Prachanda’s resignation. Even members of the ruling parties expressed their dissatisfaction with the prime minister’s statement. The opposition criticized the idea of a prime minister appointed by Delhi, asserting that such a leader should not hold office. Prachanda later clarified his remarks, stating that they had been misinterpreted to create controversy.

This is not the first time Nepalese leaders have faced criticism for their imprudent comments on sensitive issues. In this case, Prachanda’s remarks regarding Sardar Pritam Singh’s involvement in politics and lobbying efforts were seen as contentious, especially given the sensitive nature of Nepal-India relations. The controversy surrounding the prime minister’s remarks has resulted in valuable time being lost in the Parliament, which could have been utilized for important discussions on pressing issues.
