Hockey World Cup 2023: India Beat Japan 8-0 In Classification Match

Rourkela: India ended their World Cup campaign with an 8-0 win over Japan in the Classification match on Thursday at Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela.

India’s Abhishek was awarded the Man of the Match for his two goals.

India, who had made a shock exit from the showpiece event after losing to New Zealand in their crossover match, played their best game but it came too late in the tournament.

After a goalless first half, India began scoring in the third quarter and there was no stopping them as they went on to score eight.

Japan was resilient in moments, with their goalkeeper Takashi performing satisfactorily. However, the Indian power game was too much to handle for the Japanese defence.

India will now play South Africa in the ninth to 12th place match on Saturday.
