Hyderabad: India won the opening One Day International of a three-match series against New Zealand Thursday night in Hyderabad by 12 runs. New Zealand, attempting to reach the 350-run target, were dismissed for 337 in 49.2 overs.
India initially chose to bat first and amassed a mammoth 349 runs losing eight wickets.
Shubman Gill became the youngest cricketer ever to score an ODI double-century. He went on to score 208 runs off 149 balls before holding out at mid-wicket, courtesy of a brilliant catch by Glenn Phillips.
The 23-year-old joined Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan as the only other Indians to have scored two double-hundreds in one-day matches. During the match, Gill also set a new record for the fastest 1000 ODI runs by an Indian.
Raipur will host the second ODI between the two teams on Saturday.
