Play Games on Your TV: Netflix Unveils ‘Netflix Game Controller’ App

Netflix has taken a step into the gaming world by launching the ‘Netflix Game Controller’ app, offering subscribers the opportunity to play games on their TVs. The app, resembling a touchscreen gamepad with an analogue stick and action buttons, is now downloadable for free on the Apple App Store, albeit prematurely released. While an Android release is pending, the app’s purpose remains unclear, though hints at a “cloud gaming offering.” This move is intended to enhance the subscriber experience rather than compete with established gaming giants like PlayStation and Xbox.

The app’s functionality appears minimal for now, with users prompted to select games. Connectivity is likely to be via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, though specifics remain unmentioned. The app’s introduction follows Netflix’s plans to add 40 new gaming titles to its service, collaborating with partners such as Ubisoft and Super Evil Megacorp.

While the details on game integration with TVs are yet to surface, the prospect of exclusive mobile games for Netflix subscribers continues. However, recent efforts to curb password sharing have raised concerns. New verification procedures for secondary account holders have been implemented, resulting in a surge of 6 million new subscribers in Q2, totalling 238 million.

The expansion into gaming aligns with Netflix’s broader strategy, alongside ventures like the Los Angeles restaurant featuring dishes from its culinary shows. Although the exact TV launch date for the gaming catalogue remains uncertain, the ‘Netflix Game Controller’ app is now accessible on iOS devices.
