Centre Will Soon Have Law to Punish Deepfake Creators & Publishers: Vaishnaw

New Delhi: The Centre will soon come up with a new law or make amendments to existing laws to tackle the increasing menace of deepfakes, said Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday.

According to him, in the near future, the creators of deepfake videos as well as the platforms hosting them would be penalized.

“Deepfakes have emerged as a new threat to democracy. These (can) weaken trust in society and its institutions,” the IT Minister said after his meeting with various stakeholders, including social media platforms, Nasscom and other professors from the field of artificial intelligence.
