Cotton Candy Banned Across Tamil Nadu Following Presence of Cancer-Causing Element

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday banned the sale of cotton candy because of the alarming presence of a cancer-causing chemical in them.

Following a food lab analysis report, the Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced the ban. During tests, the Food Analysis Laboratory found Rhodamine-B in cotton candy and several other coloured sweets. So, they were termed unsafe for human consumption as Rhodamine-B causes cancer.

Subramanian announced that any involvement in the manufacture, sale, serving, or packing of Rhodamine B-laced products would result in stringent action.

Cotton candies are already banned in the adjoining neighbouring Union territory of Puducherry.

However, this ban will affect the livelihood of hundreds of cotton candy vendors and manufacturers in Tamil Nadu.
