Hangzhou: In a hard-fought semifinal, India triumphed over South Korea with a score of 5-3, securing their spot in the title match of the men’s hockey competition at the Asian Games. Despite an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter, the Indian team faced a resilient Korean side.
India, aiming to replicate their 2014 Incheon Asian Games gold medal victory, is acutely aware of the significance of winning gold at the ongoing Asian Games. This achievement would grant them direct entry into the 2024 Paris Olympics, a pivotal milestone for the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalists.
The goals for India were scored by Hardik Singh (5th minute), Mandeep Singh (11th), Lalit Kumar Upadhyay (15th), Amit Rohidas (24th), and Abhishek (54th). Meanwhile, Manjae Jung (17th, 20th, 42nd) managed a hat-trick for Korea.
India started aggressively, maintaining relentless pressure on Korea’s defence right from the beginning. Hardik Singh opened the scoring in the fifth minute, capitalizing on a rebound. Mandeep Singh followed suit in the 11th minute, extending the lead. Lalit Kumar Upadhyay sealed the first quarter with a goal.
Korea mounted a comeback in the second quarter, narrowing the gap with two quick goals. However, India regained composure, with Amit Rohidas converting a penalty corner. The score stood at 4-2 in India’s favour.
Korea’s relentless pressure continued, resulting in another goal by Jung in the third quarter, completing his hat-trick. India managed to defend their lead, with Abhishek scoring in the final quarter to secure a 5-3 victory.
India will now face the winners of the semifinal between defending champions Japan and China in the gold medal clash on Saturday. Winning gold at this Asian Games holds immense significance for India’s Olympic aspirations.
