Security Forces in Manipur Targeted in Suspected Militant Attack; Police Personnel Injured

Imphal: Ethnic tensions in Manipur flared again on Saturday as suspected militants ambushed a police patrol in Moreh town, Tengnoupal district. One policeman was injured when attackers armed with IEDs and explosives targeted their vehicle. A gunfight reportedly broke out between security forces and the militants.

This incident follows last month’s ambush in Kangpokpi district where an IRB jawan and a civilian were killed. The recent escalation raises concerns about ongoing inter-communal violence in the state.

The roots of the conflict lie in the May 3rd “Tribal Solidarity March” sparked by the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land further fueled tensions, leading to sporadic clashes and over 180 casualties.

Meiteis, comprising 53% of the population, face off against Nagas and Kukis (40%), who primarily reside in the hill districts. This demographic divide and historical grievances contribute to the complex conflict.

In response, the government deployed 10,000 army and paramilitary personnel to restore order. However, the latest ambush highlights the fragile situation and the need for a lasting solution.
